Rory’s first holiday

Our holiday in Madeira was fantastic, I can’t recommend highly enough the people and the place; it was a real break and we have all returned refreshed!

We got a great deal on a hotel called ‘The Vine’ in the centre of Funchal (the capital). I was initially nervous as it is billed as a ‘design hotel’ pitching itself at business travellers and I was concerned Rory may get short shrift – I couldn’t have been more wrong!  Rory was treated like a celebrity; the second his breakfast bowl and spoon was finished with it was whisked away and washed up, highchairs, cots, kettles were all produced in record time and he was generally fussed and coo-ed over to the exclusion of everyone else!  You can check out the hotel at http://tinyurl.com/6jrgrba

Rory was a little angel and I can’t thank him enough for that – so much so that every evening we would get him off to sleep then put him in his buggy and go out for dinner, he didn’t wake once!  Our days were pretty packed; the most adventurous being a trip up the mountainside in a cable car to explore the magical tropical gardens of Monte.  I volunteered to take Rory in the papoose….. hmmmmmmm hadn’t quite factored in his recent growth factor but at least I got some great exercise!

Speaking of growth factor Rory seemed to fast forward his development both physically and mentally in the week we were away, he started to crawl properly (chasing pigeons around the park), he pulled himself up in his cot for the first time, he started eating 2 meals a day and seemed to really engage with everyone and everything, or should that be flirt with everyone and everything…. shamelessly!

The day before we left Madeira’s answer to the Rio carnival (so they told us….) kicked off with the children’s parade.  All the kids from the island dressed up (pirates, princesses and punks seemed to be most popular!) and paraded through the streets. Rory was absolutely fascinated with the spectacle and, as you can see from the picture, got stuck in……..

We were really sad to leave Madeira and very much hope to return in the not too distant future.

Until next time, Emma & Rory x

Rory and the house bunnies

It’s less than a week now until our first family holiday and we are all getting excited!  I am really nervous about forgetting any of Rory’s essential kit which seems to be never-ending, I really hadn’t truly anticipated how much paraphernalia we would need to co-ordinate ….. at this rate Rory will get both suitcases and Nick and I will be operating out of a rucksack!  Gone are the days when I packed seven pairs of shoes for seven nights out; now it’s more a case of ‘will we get out to dinner or will it be bedroom picnic every night?’

Rory seems to be getting over his hand, foot and mouth nicely although he has been hit with a dose of conjunctivitis which means I have to keep him off nursery again …. seriously, he spends more time off nursery than in nursery these days!  That said I was very excited to hear the nursery is investing in some top notch sensory equipment; Rory is absolutely fascinated by lights at the moment so I am sure this will go down a treat … when he’s there!

In other news Rory is really crawling now – albeit commando style – and I can’t leave him alone for a second.  It feels very strange that my little baby can now move himself around and make his own decisions on where he wants to be and what he wants to do.  It really feels like Rory is starting to engage fully with the world; he absolutely adores our two house bunnies, following them around the kitchen with his eyes and wanting to touch them all the time, much to their consternation! He’s not restricting himself to bunnies though, birds also warrant a good stare and dogs are proving increasingly popular too!

Best Wishes for a great week, Emma & Rory x
